The police struck swiftly in a bold countermeasure against the laborers from China who sought to protest their paychecks of only $500 a month. The suburban development project shut down as police with guns swooped down on the protest arresting 23 workers, the Chinese Embassy in Riyadh reported. Text messages soon rocketed from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan to the embassy and were relayed to the families of the men. Held incommunicado, the 23 arrested men were swiftly put on a plane and deported.
Relations with China are a delicate subject among the diplomats of Saudi Arabia with extensive trade existing between the two nations. The reports on the strike come from the Chinese press who state that the Saudis are deliberately keeping a lid on worker unrest so as not to antagonize foreign relations. China is the world's largest importer of oil and needs large supplies of it to keep its economic expansion growing.
