             APARTHEID!!!
      DESIGN CONTEST SPARKS RACIST CHARGES

NEW ZEALAND: A major architectural design competition has just concluded with outrage and charges of "Design Apartheid" implying a racist outcome in choosing the finalist. NZ is a country founded in the ancestral homeland of the Maoris.  It's capital Auckland, where the new design was supposed to be built has the biggest population of native Polynesians in the world who have long been subjected to the post-colonial racial attitudes frequently found in the remnants of early 20th century empires. The architectural competition drew more than 200 entries including one from renowned native Maori architect Rewi Thompson whose design was not chosen.

Many of the entries featured similar schemes but what drew the wrath of New Zealanders and Maori's alike was that there were no natives on the selection jury. Auckland has been called a city that tries to hide its native roots , having few inferences to its pre-colonial past. One of the competitors suggested that the winning entry be modifies to include a large scale dramatic carving by master woodworker Lyonel Grant. The suggestion by arhitecture professor Mike Austin, included an extension that could be used for traditional ceremonies that emulated traditional design features.
