CONSTRUCTION SITE ATTACKED
WITH BOWS AND ARROWS
HUNDREDS RIOT AS WORKERS FLEE
INDIA: The chaos was unimaginable as hundreds of armed villagers attacked a construction site in Jharkland's Bokaro district. Armed with sickles, clubs, bows and arrows, spears and farm implements... the villagers descended on the construction site in a show of force that was positively medieval. The focus of their anger were demands for jobs at the under construction cement plant. The cement plant was part of a larger program for the impoverished region that includes a steel manufacturing facility. 25 people were arrested as police moved in to restore order.
The outrage provoking these attacks stems from simmering land disputes, sharing of wealth issues and sometimes criminal shakedowns by organized crime elements. Three times in the recent past, mobs have roughed up surveyors, attacked sites and engaged in protests.
